When you start installing AVG Antivirus you can include social network messages check and so called AVG LinkScanner technology which check websites and pages for threats before you load them. This feature is also known in such antivirus solutions like Avast! 6 Antivirus, BitDefender Antivirus 2012 and Kaspersky Antivirus 2012.
When I installed antivirus software from Kaspersky, BitDefender or Avast the software automatically scanned the system for malicious software and viruses before it run for the first time. Needless to say I haven’t seen this in AVG Antivirus 2012.
Another feature I haven’t seen in AVG Antivirus is the ability to check the system for Trojans, viruses and malware in so called safe mode. This can be very useful in case the antivirus software can’t cure or delete some virus under Windows. In BitDefender Antivirus it is called “rescue mode” scan, in Kaspersky Antivirus you can create rescue disc, boot your computer and scan the system under Linux environment. In Avast Antivirus it is called boot-time scan and works before actual loading of the OS to prevent any malware activity.
The great feature I found useful in AVG Antivirus 2012 is the ability to participate in so called AVG Community Protection Network. The information about the latest threats, Trojan horses, viruses, malware and malicious software is gathered among the millions of AVG users and update virus database as quickly as possible. This feature can also be found in Kaspersky Antivirus 2012, but not in BitDefender or Avast. Actually Avast Antivirus has so called WebRep and means website’s safety reputation and based on Avast virus labs tests and users votes.

Conclusion
What I really like in this light antivirus solution is the absence of unwanted and complicated options like in Kaspersky Antivirus. The software has the set of necessary protection tools which include antivirus, antimalware and antispyware. According to av-test.org AVG Antivirus 2012 Free Edition got the following scores:
- Protection 4.5 out of 6.0
- Repair 4.5 out of 6.0
- Usability 5.0 out of 6.0
This is the above average result of the antivirus report which was made in November/December 2011.
